Enos Mills was one of the park's great heroes. From 1884 to 1922, he made his home in these mountains, acting as a naturalist and guide, popularizing the area through his writings, and tirelessly campaigning for the establish of a national park. Mills Lake is named in his honor, and what a memorial it is. No lake is more beautiful or has a more impressive backdrop. The hike passes through such superb scenery that most would consider it reward enough, even without the incomparable lake at its destination.
